We are in the very early stages of working with the Main Library on a Digital Repository. The repository will act like a database of digital collections. They may be archival, historical, scholarly publications, or sound or video files. The collections will most likely represent the intellectual work of the university but may include items such as the digitized minutes of the Pima County Medical Society which we have been working on.

To begin with, the project members are looking at adding materials to the repository that are already in a digital format. At some point we might want to digitize materials for inclusion. We might be able to do this “in-house” or we may have to outsource it. Digitization could include tasks such as scanning, assigning chapter headings, adding metadata (keywords, indexing), etc.
Do you know of materials that would be good candidates for inclusion in the UA Digital Repository?
Can you imagine a role that you might play in helping to create the repository?
How could the library work with faculty to encourage contributions to the repository?

Several years ago we obtained the papers of an early telemedicine project carried out in Southern Arizona by NASA. Telemedicine is a rapidly growing field that's spawning a lot of research. This might be a relatively easy collection to add one the repository is up and running.
At the Univesity of Utah HSL students are scanning documents for their repository. They check alignment and contrast and make sure they have a good copy. The folks on the reference desk take those files and mark chapters and subchapters. The staff in their Collection Services department add subject headings (metadata.) Then the item is loaded into their repository.
Would this, or some variation, work at AHSL?
I feel in we need to move into the future of library work this would be a good start by doing the Digital Repository.
I agree about libraries having to stay up on the new technologies and move more to the digital holdings. A digital repository would be good, I think. And I'm willing to help this project along if needed.
Another item to maybe include would be AHSC publications like the Harmony magazine.

Yes, especially since many publications like Harmony are probably "born digital" and could easily be added.

It will be interesting to see how this utilization of technology develops over the next five years. The libraries of my childhood certainly aren't the libraries of today. It's hard to envision the libraries of tomorrow.
I agree with Tessie it would be nice to have Harmony and other local publications on our Digital repository.
