Research Day
On Wednesday the AHSC presented the “Frontiers in Biomedical Research” Poster Forum on the AHSC plaza. AHSL was represented by two very nice poster presentations. Jennifer Martin and Sandy Kramer displayed their poster describing a literature-searching project in the College of Pharmacy. Our second poster presented work done on the Frontera Collaboration for border health by Annabelle, Brooke, Yamila and Jeanette. You can see Jennifer and Sandy’s poster on our website at:

Collegiate Showcase
As part of Homecoming weekend the Health Sciences Center is presenting a “collegiate showcase” on the AHSC plaza today from 1-3:30 PM. The exhibit will feature posters from many organizations on the AHSC including the library. With short notice Yamila and Mary R. put together a beautiful poster representing the library. Stop by the plaza after our staff appreciation luncheon to see it. Thanks to everyone involved in getting this done!
Dr. John Palmer
Thanks to Nga for putting together a wonderful poster celebrating the life and career of Dr. John Palmer. Dr. Palmer will be receiving the UA Honorary Alumnus Award over Homecoming Weekend. You can see the poster in the glass cases, just outside the library entrance, near the doors at the top of the exterior stairway.
24/7 study area?
The request we get most from students is for longer hours. Many newer library buildings include a room with a separate entrance that is available 24/7 with no supervision. We are starting to explore the possibility of creating a 24/7 study area in room 2101, the Java City area. By closing off the room with a movable partition across the library side in the evenings and giving access from the hallway with a card swipe we may be able to meet the student’s needs. We are considering installing security cameras and perhaps employing a staff person if additional security is needed. We are working with Facilities, Risk Management, UAPD, UMC Security and ITS on this proposal. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please pass them along to any ATeam member.
Exhibit reception
Dr. Witte will be hosting another reception to publicize the exhibit, Creating a Community of Questioners for the Future. The reception will be held on Wednesday, October 27 from 4-6 PM. I’m sure that library staff will be welcome to attend.

LAC, Development
Library Advisory Committee
The LAC held its first meeting of the academic year on Monday. Cindy has mailed out the minutes.
Development (fund raising)
During two meetings with Dr. Crist we have discussed strategies for fund raising. I outlined these discussions in my update of September 17 (http://ahslupdates.blogspot.com/). On Monday Jeanette and I met with Dr. Shaun Sommerer, Vice President for Development for the AHSC. Dr. Sommerer is working closely with Dr. Crist on development. He is very excited about a focus on the library for AHSC fund raising. He shared his insights into how best to focus our fundraising efforts and gave us valuable feedback on the materials that we are developing for Dr. Crist. From this point on our development efforts will no longer be channeled exclusively through the College of Medicine, but will be a priority for the entire AHSC development team. Development is always a long-term effort, but we will be laying the groundwork now for future financial gains.

Rachael, Visitors
Rachael Anderson
The Medical Library Association’s (MLA) Oral History Project has just completed two oral histories featuring Rachael Anderson, Director of the AHSL from 1991-2001. One is an interview with Rachael and the other is a joint interview with Rachael and Alison Bunting, former Director of the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library at UCLA. The complete transcriptions of the interviews are available from the National Library of Medicine or from MLA Headquarters. However, abstracts are available at the MLA website. Rachel’s interview is here:

Phoenix visit, Clinical Education Librarians
Visit to Phoenix
Yesterday Gary visited the Phoenix campus to catch up with Jacque and Lindsey and to meet with some of our Phoenix Clinical Education Librarians – Kathy Zeblisky, Becky Birr, April Aquinaga, Sally Harvey and Lora Robbins. Kathleen Carlson from ASU wasn’t able to attend. We heard President Shelton speak and had a chance to chat about our medical students who do rotations in the Phoenix hospitals. President Shelton pointed out that the UA has lost $100 million in funding. $50 million has been made up in cuts (including over 400 layoffs), $30 million from tuition increases (after pulling some for financial aid) and $20 million in federal “stimulus” funds. There will be no more stimulus funding next fiscal year. The President addressed several other issues and responded to questions from the audience. While in Phoenix he met with Phoenix mayor Phil Gordon and with the editorial board of The Arizona Republic.
What is a Clinical Education Librarian?
Our medical students spend much of their third and fourth years doing “rotations” through different departments in different hospitals. During rotations they go on rounds, watching residents and doctors treating patients and attend lectures to learn about the various specialties (pediatrics, radiology, cardiology, etc.) They are sometimes asked to research a topic or treatment and will visit the hospital library. Often the hospital library will have the information resources that they need. Sometimes, however, they will want to use the AHSL collection. They can get to our electronic resources from offsite but they may still need help so they turn to the hospital librarian. Both as a way of thanking the hospital librarians who help our students and to give them access to the same AHSL resources that the students have, the AHSL created the Clinical Education Librarian (CEL) appointment. This is similar to an adjunct professor appointment in the College of Medicine. We also have one CEL from ASU, who helps AHSL-Phoenix with orientation and answers questions from our students who use the ASU downtown library. Here is a list of our Clinical Education Librarians.
