Research Day
On Wednesday the AHSC presented the “Frontiers in Biomedical Research” Poster Forum on the AHSC plaza. AHSL was represented by two very nice poster presentations. Jennifer Martin and Sandy Kramer displayed their poster describing a literature-searching project in the College of Pharmacy. Our second poster presented work done on the Frontera Collaboration for border health by Annabelle, Brooke, Yamila and Jeanette. You can see Jennifer and Sandy’s poster on our website at:

Collegiate Showcase
As part of Homecoming weekend the Health Sciences Center is presenting a “collegiate showcase” on the AHSC plaza today from 1-3:30 PM. The exhibit will feature posters from many organizations on the AHSC including the library. With short notice Yamila and Mary R. put together a beautiful poster representing the library. Stop by the plaza after our staff appreciation luncheon to see it. Thanks to everyone involved in getting this done!
Dr. John Palmer
Thanks to Nga for putting together a wonderful poster celebrating the life and career of Dr. John Palmer. Dr. Palmer will be receiving the UA Honorary Alumnus Award over Homecoming Weekend. You can see the poster in the glass cases, just outside the library entrance, near the doors at the top of the exterior stairway.
24/7 study area?
The request we get most from students is for longer hours. Many newer library buildings include a room with a separate entrance that is available 24/7 with no supervision. We are starting to explore the possibility of creating a 24/7 study area in room 2101, the Java City area. By closing off the room with a movable partition across the library side in the evenings and giving access from the hallway with a card swipe we may be able to meet the student’s needs. We are considering installing security cameras and perhaps employing a staff person if additional security is needed. We are working with Facilities, Risk Management, UAPD, UMC Security and ITS on this proposal. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please pass them along to any ATeam member.
Exhibit reception
Dr. Witte will be hosting another reception to publicize the exhibit, Creating a Community of Questioners for the Future. The reception will be held on Wednesday, October 27 from 4-6 PM. I’m sure that library staff will be welcome to attend.

Medical Library Association meeting
Report from Washington
I’m in Washington, DC at the Medical Library Association annual meeting. Others from HSL who are here are: Annabelle, Brooke, Carol, Mary R., Pat, and Sandy. At least three of our Clinical Education Librarians are here also: Becky Birr, Kathy Zeblisky and Marni Ditmar. Our three Knowledge River Interns, Azul, Iris and Ramona are also here and seem to be enjoying the conference. Yesterday Annabelle and Carol gave presentations as part of a half-day symposium called, “The Informationist in Practice.” The large room was packed and people were really interested in hearing what they had to report. Today we were well represented in the poster sessions. Annabelle, Brooke and Jeanette were co-authors on a poster about the Frontera Collaboration on border health and Jacque was a co-author on a poster about libraries on new health sciences campuses.

Meeting, AZHIN contract
MLA Chapter Meeting
Several folks from AHSL are attending the joint meeting of two regional chapters of the Medical Library Association in Glendale, AZ. Mary Riordan, Brooke, Jacque and Lindsey all worked on various committees to organize this meeting. Clinical Education Librarians Becky Birr and Kathy Zeblisky are co-chairs of the entire meeting and Lora Robbins and April Aguinaga have also worked on committees. We also have several people presenting papers and posters. Jeanette presented both a paper and a poster, on behalf of her several co-authors from other libraries, reporting on our collaboration with the other libraries of the Tribal Connections Four Corners project. Annabelle presented a paper, on behalf of her co-author Martha Moore-Monroy from the U of A, on Information and Outreach about HPV and the HPV Vaccine. Jacque, Lindsey and Kathleen Carlson of ASU (one of our Clinical Education Librarians) presented a paper on the challenges of developing a new library. Carol presented a paper, on behalf of her co-authors Pat and Gary, on our process of supervisor evaluation.
AZHIN Contract
Sponsored Projects approved the AZHIN administrative contract this week. Although expected, this is always good news. AZHIN will pay the library over $100,000 during 2010 to handle its administrative and technical affairs; the amount includes salaries, technical support, travel, and various miscellaneous items. This is the 12th year that the library has managed this account.

Congratulations to David Howse and Jacque Doyle. David coauthored a paper that was published in “Medical Teacher” on September 29, 2008. The article describes the Evidence-Based Search engine that has become so valuable to our students and library users. Jacque is the coauthor on a poster that was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Academic Medical Centers this last week. The citation is: Robinson, C.; Maggio, L.; Doyle, J,D.; Sollenberger, S. Librarians strengthening partnerships: ongoing collaborations with colleagues in medical and healthcare education. Poster presented at the AAMC Annual Meeting, October 31, 2008. I've attached a copy of the poster to my email message about this update. NLM/AAHSL Fellow
As many of you know, both Jerry Perry and Jeanette Ryan were selected in recent years as NLM/AAHSL Fellows. This highly competitive program selects 4-6 librarians each year who show strong leadership potential to participate in a mentoring experience. This coming year AHSL has been chosen to host Sandra I. Martin, Interim Director, Shiffman Medical Library at Wayne State University as an NLM/AAHSL Fellow. She will visit us several times in the coming year and will have a chance to meet with everyone. She and I will also communicate regularly and jointly participate in some learning experiences. Sandra will be added to some of our listservs so that she can keep up on what’s happening at AHSL.
