Searches
We have gotten permission from Dr. Crist, the Vice President for Health Affairs, to open two searches for librarians. The first will be to fill our College of Medicine liaison vacancy created when David left. We hope to post that position next week. The Administrative Team is discussing how best to structure the other position.

Salaries, 4 Corners Mtg, David
Bad news about salary increases
Several weeks ago I mentioned that the University was considering awarding salary increases in the spring. Yesterday I learned that this plan has been cancelled because the financial situation and in the state is worse than anticipated. The university is looking at a possible 20% cut in state funds for the 2011-12 fiscal year.
Report on Four Corners Meeting
This past Monday and Tuesday I was in Salt Lake City to meet with the directors of the other Four Corners health sciences libraries. We discussed the continuation of our Tribal Connections Four Corners (TC4C) project. (We are looking at new funding opportunities, increased involvement with the National Library of Medicine and a pilot program to test our assumptions.) We also discussed issues of copyright, licensing and ILL to international libraries and to unaffiliated users, library governance structures, CTSA (Clinical Translational Science Award) opportunities for libraries and an upcoming webinar on the publishing industry that we are sponsoring with several other groups. We also got a tour of the Eccles Library at the University of Utah, which has just had an extensive remodeling. The entire print collection is now in compact shelving on the lower level and the rest of the building (two other floors) are devoted to study space and a computer commons. We also agreed to have an online meeting in the spring and to meet at the next MLA and AAMC meetings in order to save money. Our next on-campus meeting will be in Tucson in the spring of 2012.

Don’t forget the goodbye coffee for David, next Thursday in the staff lounge from 2-3.

Congratulations to David Howse!
David has been accepted to the Biomedical Informatics Course jointly sponsored by the National Library of Medicine and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. Admission is very competitive and acceptance comes with a full scholarship that covers all expenses for the seven-day course. David will be attending the spring session. He will be joining Sandy, Jacque and Carol as graduates of the program.

Congratulations to David Howse and Jacque Doyle. David coauthored a paper that was published in “Medical Teacher” on September 29, 2008. The article describes the Evidence-Based Search engine that has become so valuable to our students and library users. Jacque is the coauthor on a poster that was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Academic Medical Centers this last week. The citation is: Robinson, C.; Maggio, L.; Doyle, J,D.; Sollenberger, S. Librarians strengthening partnerships: ongoing collaborations with colleagues in medical and healthcare education. Poster presented at the AAMC Annual Meeting, October 31, 2008. I've attached a copy of the poster to my email message about this update. (Jacque can provide a larger, more legible file if you’d like.)
NLM/AAHSL Fellow
As many of you know, both Jerry Perry and Jeanette Ryan were selected in recent years as NLM/AAHSL Fellows. This highly competitive program selects 4-6 librarians each year who show strong leadership potential to participate in a mentoring experience. This coming year AHSL has been chosen to host Sandra I. Martin, Interim Director, Shiffman Medical Library at Wayne State University as an NLM/AAHSL Fellow. She will visit us several times in the coming year and will have a chance to meet with everyone. She and I will also communicate regularly and jointly participate in some learning experiences. Sandra will be added to some of our listservs so that she can keep up on what’s happening at AHSL.

Congratulations to David
David Howse, Paul Bracke and Dr. Sam Keim have published an article in the April 2008 issue of the Journal of the Medical Library Association. Its title is, “Evidence-based Medicine Search: a customizable federated search engine,” and the article describes not only the search engine itself
