Congratulations to Mary R.
Mary has been asked to serve as Chair Designate/Chair of the Medical Library Association Awards Committee. Her term will start on June 1, 2011. The Awards Committee oversees all of the MLA Award Juries, reviews policies and procedures related to awards and is empowered to recommend to the Board a nominee for the Noyes Award, the highest honor given by MLA. This position carries a lot of responsibility and a full workload!

Dave Piper, History Detective!
The December issue of the Pima County Medical Society (PCMS) newsletter has a page-long story about the digitization of the PCMS historical minutes and some of the interesting stories contained in them. The article credits Dave Piper with the digitization project and with additional extensive research that has helped to bring these minutes to life. The article ends with a heartfelt thank you to Dave from the Executive Director, Dr. Steve Nash.

Congratulations to Jennifer Martin
Jennifer has been accepted to the Biomedical Informatics Course jointly sponsored by the National Library of Medicine and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. Admission is very competitive and acceptance comes with a full scholarship that covers all expenses for the seven-day course. Jennifer will be attending the fall session. She will be joining Sandy and Carol as graduates of the program.

New Position
As mentioned in the January 7th update the library has received permission to create a new librarian position. A job description has been drafted for an “Emerging Technologies Librarian.” The person in this position will be helping us to use new technology – from mobile phones to social networks – to communicate with and support our clients. The search will begin as soon as the current search concludes.

Strategic Planning Committees
Thanks to all who volunteered to serve on committees this year. We weren’t able to place everyone on a committee and we did have to “draft” a few people. Thanks in advance to those who have agreed to serve for two years (or one year on the Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Task Force.) The ATeam will be meeting with each group to get them started.

Congratulations Sandy, Jennifer M., and Joan
Sandy, Jennifer Martin and Joan have coauthored a paper with Marion Slack from the College of Pharmacy and Jim Martin from the Main Library. The article titled, “Effectiveness of a Liaison Program in Meeting Information Needs of College of Pharmacy Faculty” was published in the January 2011 issue of Medical Reference Services Quarterly and describes the use of focus groups in measuring program effectiveness. Congratulations Jeanette and Jacque
Jeanette and Jacque are co-authors on an article in the MLA News that describes the Tribal Connections/Four Corners 2010 Conference in Gallup, NM. Yamila, Jacque, Jeanette and Gary were among the many participants in this meeting. I can’t post a link because the newsletter is available to members only but the library has a subscription as do many of the librarians.

New “Artwork”
Check out our new wall hanging in the office – you can’t miss it. It’s a large poster listing our Mission, Values and Strategic Directions. We’re hoping that it will serve as a constant reminder of our goals for the coming year(s).

Budget, Space, Congratulations to Sally

Budget
Dr. Crist has asked each AHSC Unit Director and Business Manager to make a budget presentation. All units have common forms to fill out that present our budget over the last several years. In addition we can present text describing our budget situation and give an oral presentation. Cindy and I have been working on these documents for several weeks and have also consulted with the Administrative Team. Our presentation hasn’t been scheduled but will likely be in the next 2-3 weeks.

Library Space
On Wednesday eleven people representing the library, facilities, Interprofessional Education and the Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI) met to talk about shared use of the fourth floor. All groups have similar interests and needs with a lot of overlap. There are a few needs for dedicated space for each group but, for the most part, all groups would like to see additional meeting, conference and classrooms. All understand our need to make these rooms available for student study. Each group is going to make a list of the rooms that they must have and we will meet again in a few weeks to let facilities try to make sense of these requests.

Congratulations to Sally Harvey, Director of Learning Resources at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix and AHSL Clinical Education Librarian and her colleague Janene Wandersee. Strategic planning, publication

Strategic Planning
The Administrative Team spent a very productive day and a half working with our facilitator, Rick Forsman, to design a strategic planning process. We will use the All Staff meeting on Feb. 4 and another about two weeks later to begin this process. Watch for an email before the Feb. 4th meeting with a document for you to comment on. The ATeam is looking forward to working with you on this multi-part plan.

Articles on library space
In the latest issue of the Journal of the Medical Library Association I coordinated the publication of six articles describing how health sciences libraries have recently lost or been asked to give up space. Congratulations to Sandy and me. We’ve had an article published in the April 2009 issue of the Journal of the Medical Library Association. The article is called, “Embedded librarians: one library’s model for decentralized service” and describes the library liaison model at the AHSL. TV Stars!
On Sunday, November 30, Pat and Annabelle appeared on “In Focus”, a show on KTTU, Channel 18 that deals with local and regional issues. They were interviewed about the WeSearch project, the Knowledge River program in SIRLS and the new roles of libraries and librarians. We will be adding a DVD copy of the program to the collection soon. Great job and great PR for the AHSL!

Congratulations to David

David Howse, Paul Bracke and Dr. Sam Keim have published an article in the April 2008 issue of the Journal of the Medical Library Association. Its title is, “Evidence-based Medicine Search: a customizable federated search engine,” and the article describes not only the search engine itself

At the recommendation of the Dean, President Shelton has awarded Librarian Emeritus status to Fred Heidenreich in recognition of his 36 years of service to the university.

Computer support changes
On Thursday I will attend the first of a series of meetings to plan for the implementation of the Computer Consultants’ report. Beginning in September there will be weekly meetings to decide what sort of organization will be created to support computing needs in the College of Medicine.
