Search Committee
The Search Committee for the Emerging Technologies Librarian is moving ahead and has posted the ad in numerous places. We already have applicants and will begin the initial selection process soon.

Eleanor Johnson Award
Eleanor Johnson was a librarian at the Arizona Health Sciences Library from 1972 until her death in 1984. She was active in women’s causes and had a longstanding interest in encouraging women in medicine. After her death a fund was created to recognize an outstanding female in each College of Medicine graduating class. Next Thursday I’ll have the honor of presenting the Eleanor Johnson Award at the College of Medicine Senior Awards Luncheon. However I can’t reveal the name of the winner until then!

Congratulations Jamie!
I’m happy to announce that MLGSCA (the Medical Library Group of Southern Arizona and Arizona) has awarded a $1,000 scholarship toward library school to Jamie Navarette, one of the Knowledge River Scholars who has been working in the library this year. Here is the brief bio that was published in the MLGSCA Newsletter.

Jamie N. Navarette is currently a Knowledge River 9 Scholar and graduate assistant enrolled at the University of Arizona’s Information Resources and Library Science program anticipating graduation in December of 2011. Her previous degrees include a BA and MA in English from the University of Nebraska as well as a Library Media Endorsement and Secondary Language Arts teaching license. Currently, she assists with circulation/reference, cataloging/technical services and outreach at the Arizona Health Sciences Center at the university. Her career plans will focus on the development of effective health promotion programs in collaboration with community agencies, public health personnel and health care entities.

I’m happy to announce that Nicole Capdarest-Arest will be joining us on Monday, April 4 as our newest Information Services Librarian and College of Medicine Liaison. Special thanks to the search committee - Amanda, Brooke, Javad, Jeanette and Sandy – for sorting through applications, arranging the interviews, compiling staff comments and making a final recommendation!

The sound of progress
You may have heard (or be hearing) some noise on the second floor this morning. Pat, from the Carpentry Shop, is hanging up the mounting for our new “news” monitor in the front lobby. The monitor itself is on backorder but we hope to have it up and running in the next few weeks.

Welcome back!
I hope that everyone had an enjoyable break over the holidays. If you’re like me it already seems like a long time ago!

Searches
We have gotten permission from Dr. Crist, the Vice President for Health Affairs, to open two searches for librarians. The first will be to fill our College of Medicine liaison vacancy created when David left. We hope to post that position next week. The Administrative Team is discussing how best to structure the other position.

Phoenix search committee, Purple Room, 4th Floor

Phoenix search committee
The plan for Phoenix is to hire a second librarian in time for the start of classes this summer. A search committee has been formed. Jacque Doyle and Jeanette are co-chairing the committee. Mary Holcomb and Maggie Puzauskas are the other library members. Dr. Howard Silverman, will also serve and several other Phoenix faculty members will be appointed.

Purple Room
The doors have been added to the purple room on the 4th floor. They look great and should help to make it a quieter area for students to study in.

4th Floor
Several weeks ago, when the UAPD officer visited, we had a brainstorming session about the 4th floor. Several excellent ideas were generated and presented to the College of Medicine through Dr. Malan. I’m happy to report that Dr. Malan favors an approach that will not limit use to the College of Medicine but should help us to enforce the rules.
We’ve posted the “library rules” on the 4th floor and the College is very willing to help us should COM or Physiology students be caught violating the rules. Many of our Information Desk staff also feel that closing overnight may help with some of the problems we’ve been having.
