Search Committee
The Search Committee for the Emerging Technologies Librarian is moving ahead and has posted the ad in numerous places. We already have applicants and will begin the initial selection process soon.

Eleanor Johnson Award
Eleanor Johnson was a librarian at the Arizona Health Sciences Library from 1972 until her death in 1984. She was active in women’s causes and had a longstanding interest in encouraging women in medicine. After her death a fund was created to recognize an outstanding female in each College of Medicine graduating class. Next Thursday I’ll have the honor of presenting the Eleanor Johnson Award at the College of Medicine Senior Awards Luncheon. However I can’t reveal the name of the winner until then!

Congratulations Jamie!
I’m happy to announce that MLGSCA (the Medical Library Group of Southern Arizona and Arizona) has awarded a $1,000 scholarship toward library school to Jamie Navarette, one of the Knowledge River Scholars who has been working in the library this year. Here is the brief bio that was published in the MLGSCA Newsletter.

Jamie N. Navarette is currently a Knowledge River 9 Scholar and graduate assistant enrolled at the University of Arizona’s Information Resources and Library Science program anticipating graduation in December of 2011. Her previous degrees include a BA and MA in English from the University of Nebraska as well as a Library Media Endorsement and Secondary Language Arts teaching license. Currently, she assists with circulation/reference, cataloging/technical services and outreach at the Arizona Health Sciences Center at the university. Her career plans will focus on the development of effective health promotion programs in collaboration with community agencies, public health personnel and health care entities.

Kudos to Hannah and Sandy
The College of Nursing was visited this week by their accreditation team. We were asked to participate since access to information resources is considered an important part of accreditation. Before Sandy gave our presentation, a member of the accreditation team called her over. She said, "You probably will not be at the wrap-up meeting, so I want to tell you now that many of the students we spoke to just raved about the library. They loved the librarians; they loved the library and said you are all so helpful. That they can get anything they need from you."
The Colleges take comments by accreditation teams very seriously. This kind of positive feedback reflects so well on all of our efforts here in the library and especially on the work that Hannah and Sandy do with help from others in IS. A positive report from an accreditation team reinforces the value of the library to campus leaders.

Award ceremony
On Tuesday Mary R. and Pat were again recognized for their University Outstanding Achievement Award. (see the update from March 15) The ceremony was held at the Student Union where the U.S.S. Arizona bell was rung in their honor and President Shelton presented them with certificates. There were only three other awards given.

Congratulations Pat
It is with mixed feelings that I ask you to congratulate Pat Auflick who has accepted the position of Director at the Goodstein Library at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming. Pat will be “going home” to a beautiful (but chilly) part of the country. Pat has a nationwide reputation for her outreach work and has visited just about every corner of Arizona on behalf of the library. Plans will be announced soon for an opportunity to say goodbye and to wish Pat well in this new endeavor.

Eleanor Johnson
Some of you will remember Eleanor Johnson who was a librarian at the AHSL from 1972 until her death in 1984. She provided information service to healthcare providers around the state, especially in rural areas and worked to improve library services in very small hospitals. She was active in women's causes and had a longstanding interest in encouraging women in medicine. After her death a memorial award was established and given to an outstanding female medical student each year. In 1996 the funds in the award account had been almost depleted and the award was suspended. This week we learned that the account has built back up enough to continue the award for nine years. At the COM Awards Breakfast the Eleanor Johnson Academic Excellence Award will be given again for the first time in fourteen years.

Coffee plan
From May 5th through the 13th the library will provide free coffee and tea for students studying for their final exams. This is paid for with student fee money.
