Around the Library
This week the IS Department met. Hannah presented a tutorial on the Index Catalog of the Library of the Surgeon General’s Office and Mari presented EndNote information, including the interface between Sociological Abstracts, POPLINE and EndNote.

Security gates
Our security gates on the front doors have become very unreliable. We rely on them not only for book security but also to count the number of people coming into the library each day. We are looking at various options. One possibility is to close off the “single” door on the south side of the front entrance. This would save us the cost of purchasing another gate. We are also looking at installing only one gate on the “double” door and filling in the space with a panel or door that only library staff could open or move (in the event of needing a wider space to move equipment through.) Another option is to install two doors in the double space to eliminate the need for the sliding gate that we use to close the library.

Office moves

Office moves
This weekend Hannah will be moving to the office that David previously occupied, along the south wall on the 2nd floor. When Nicole begins work on April 8 she will move into the office that Hannah had been in.

Congratulations Kathleen
Kathleen Carlson’s appointment as a Clinical Education Librarian has been renewed on the recommendation of the Appointments, Continuing Status and Promotions Committee. Kathleen is the Health Sciences Librarian at the ASU Downtown Phoenix Campus and works closely with Jacque and Lindsey in support of our students.

Strategic Plan
In the September 24th update I described the status of the strategic plan. Today the Administrative Team met and agreed that we are very close to finalizing a draft for you to review. We have scheduled a meeting for next week to put the finishing touches on the DRAFT that you will be asked to respond to.

Thanks Hannah
I want to thank Hannah and others who helped us think through the problem of late-night study hours for AHSL. In response to the idea of turning Java City into a 24/7 study area Hannah offered several alternatives and did some “out of the box” thinking about the problem. The result is our pilot test of extended hours for the whole building.

AAMC
Jeanette, Jacque and Gary just returned from the AAMC/AAHSL meeting in Washington, DC. AAMC is the Association of American Medical Colleges and AAHSL is the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries. Jeanette is a member of the AAHSL Assessment and Statistics Committee that works on measuring our value and allows us to compare ourselves to other libraries. Jacque has formed a group for librarians at new health sciences libraries to meet and share experiences. Gary will be serving as AAHSL President-elect over the next year. This meeting is a wonderful opportunity to learn what is going on at other medical school libraries and to learn more about issues facing academic medicine. Speakers at this meeting, in addition to a variety of Deans and Associate Deans were Malcolm Gladwell, author, and Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. A discussion presenting differing takes on the current political situation was presented by Donna Brazile, Democratic strategist and Al Gore’s campaign manager and Amy Holmes, Co-host of the Washington Times and Talk Radio Network's "America's Morning News."

Kudos to Hannah and Sandy
The College of Nursing was visited this week by their accreditation team. We were asked to participate since access to information resources is considered an important part of accreditation. Before Sandy gave our presentation, a member of the accreditation team called her over. She said, "You probably will not be at the wrap-up meeting, so I want to tell you now that many of the students we spoke to just raved about the library. They loved the librarians; they loved the library and said you are all so helpful. That they can get anything they need from you."
The Colleges take comments by accreditation teams very seriously. This kind of positive feedback reflects so well on all of our efforts here in the library and especially on the work that Hannah and Sandy do with help from others in IS. A positive report from an accreditation team reinforces the value of the library to campus leaders.

Award ceremony
On Tuesday Mary R. and Pat were again recognized for their University Outstanding Achievement Award. (see the update from March 15) The ceremony was held at the Student Union where the U.S.S. Arizona bell was rung in their honor and President Shelton presented them with certificates. There were only three other awards given.

Hannah Recognized

Congratulations to Hannah. Ernesto Molmenti, MD and two others, acknowledge her help in the front of a new book, “Intestinal and Multivisceral Transplantation.” Hannah is recognized for insuring the accuracy of the book. She worked on the glossary and other facts throughout the work.
