Effective Monday, February 6, Kathleen joined the AHSL Phoenix library faculty as our first education librarian! We are most happy to have her here, as she brings superb experience as a health sciences librarian, most recently as the health sciences librarian at the downtown Phoenix campus of ASU, and prior to that as a hospital librarian at John C, Lincoln Hospital. A UA AHSL "Clinical Education Librarian" since 2007, Kathleen is an active member of the Medical Library Association, with several scholarly papers and posted at its annual meetings, including one forthcoming at the 2012 meeting in Seattle. New carpeting, future building in Phoenix
New carpeting
After listening to the opinions of those who came to see the carpet, and after viewing the carpet samples under various lighting conditions and next to various pieces of furniture, we have selected “Vertical” as the pattern and color for the new carpet. This was the deep forest green sample. The baseboard will be a navy blue. Installation should begin in Java City in about five weeks. Except for the Java City area installation will take place at night when the library is closed. The entire 2nd and 3rd floors will be recarpeted. You can see a sample of the new color in the office.

Planning is still underway for a Health Sciences Education Building on the Phoenix campus. The library will be housed in this building and will be joined by the contents of the ASU College of Nursing Health Informatics Learning Resources Center and one staff person from ASU. We have the latest (but not final version) of the plans down in the office. Please stop by to see them!

New Position for Kristy
As of Monday, January 12, Kristy Stephens will leave the library and move into a new position titled "Coordinator of Instructional Technology." In this new role, she will be responsible for directing & coordinating the activities of the Office of Instructional Technology - Phoenix to support academic computing and instructional innovations. Although her new position is in Information Technology Services she will still devote about 10% of her time to the library and will continue to serve on our web committee.
Her new office will be in Building 3, Room 3383 and her new phone number is (602) 827-2181. She will report to Dr. Howard Silverman and will directly supervise Nate Brown.
Please join me in congratulating Kristy on moving into this new position!

Prologue and BMI Weeks at the COM-Phoenix
Kristy, Lindsey and I were thrilled to welcome our (wonderful) 48 new students and got several good hours and quality time with them to provide what we are calling Managing Medical Information I and II. In the first session we quickly reviewed reasons to start at the AHSL home page and key navigation recommendations. In Session II, we went more deeply into how to conduct effective searches, focusing on the EBM Search Engine and PubMed. We were fortunate to have cases with which to work and for the students to relate to, and we believe our results (gratitude, enthusiasm, participation and no sleepers!) show that we were effective. We are grateful to two CELs, Kathleen Carlson and Lora Robbins who were invaluable with the hands-on sections. Their presence also introduced students to two area librarians they can work with and consult. Tomorrow we have a session on mobile computing, and next week, we see our new MS-2s in their first week of class which focuses on Biomedical Informatics. We have also been included as faculty for the learning community/scholarly project (called Scholarly Project 101) curriculum and will be in class with the students for those sessions.We are grateful to our IS Team as all the student laptops worked for both weeks, a radical change from last year. There were few snafus, thanks to pre-planning and good IT support. Security, 4 Corners Meeting
Security Awareness
Most of us love animals and want only the best for them. However some who are concerned about the use of animals in medical research have used tactics that endanger property, research and people. April is Animal Rights Month and April 20-26 is World Week for Animals in Labs.
In the past April has seen demonstrations, sometimes accompanied by violence, at universities where medical research is done. In 1989 fires were set in two buildings at the University of Arizona (one was destroyed) and 1200 lab animals were released, some carrying infectious diseases.
No threats are known to exist on campus this year. I attended a campus session today that reminded the community of precautions that should be taken to insure the safety of university employees. A good handout was distributed and I will send copies out early next week.

This Thursday and Friday the directors of the 4 Corners academic health sciences libraries will be meeting in Phoenix. We will tour the new campus, the ASU downtown campus and library, and TGen. We will also meet regarding shared concerns, issues and solutions. Jacque is hosting us and has done a fantastic job of planning and scheduling.

New website, new building, new books and new room!
New Website
Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard on the new look for our website! With its clean look and quick access to many of our information resources the site is sure to be popular with both students and faculty. The home page is as important as our front lobby and it’s what most library “visitors” will see first. We had a great kick-off “party” yesterday that attracted a lot of attention and moved a lot of popcorn. Thanks to everyone involved on the design, construction and promotion of the new site!
New Building in Phoenix
Last week Jacque, Kristy, Lindsey and I (via teleconference) attended a meeting of the planning committee for the Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB) on the Phoenix campus. A new, larger space for the library is planned for this building. The legislature has provided funding for planning the building but hasn’t yet provided funding for construction.
New Books Display
Mary Holcomb has worked with Javad to create a new book display in the lobby, outside of the new videoconference room. Tessie created a sign and the space looks bright and colorful. These books are available for immediate checkout.
Videoconference Room
On Wednesday the Administrative Team held its weekly meeting, the first in the new facility. Communication is so much easier when we can see Jacque and she can see us! This room is available for any meeting that involves participation from folks at both AHSL locations. Linda can schedule the room for your meetings.
