SIRSI, Public Safety, 4th floor

Sirsi to Innovative
The Main Library has offered to split the cost with us to move off of our SIRSI library system onto the Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (triple I) system that they use. We had investigated paying for this ourselves several years ago and couldn’t afford it. This offer, along with money coming from the new student library fee, makes this project more affordable. Many staff from Resources are working with SIRSI, Innovative and staff from the Main Library to lay the groundwork for this change. There are many decisions to be made quickly if we are to reach our goal of moving over before the Fall semester.

Public Safety
Many of you were able to attend the presentation by Officer Romero of the UAPD yesterday. Officer Romero gave us advice and tips on how to deal with inappropriate behavior. Some of the many key pieces of advice were:
>If you feel in danger or uncomfortable, do not hesitate to call UAPD
>911 dialed on a campus phone will connect with UAPD, on a cell phone you’ll get TPD
>Practice good customer service – the nicer we are to unruly people, the harder it is for them to continue to act out and the harder it is for them to claim that we provoked them

4th Floor
Before Officer Romero arrived we had a quick discussion about the 4th floor. I met last week with Facilities Management and they made several suggestions. One was to limit access to the 4th floor after 6 PM to College of Medicine students.
Some of the suggestions made in our group discussion yesterday were:
>Limit access after 6 PM to AHSC Graduate Students
>Leave the purple room open to all who want quiet study, limit the rest of the floor to COM graduate students (COM physiology undergrads seem to cause many of the problems.) COM students would self-enforce with AHSL staff as backup.
>Experiment by making the 4th floor COM only during Board study times – coming up
>Several suggestions were offered for limiting physical access to the 4th floor.
No final decisions have been made. I will be discussing options with the College of Medicine. If you have any comments or suggestions, please share them with me.
