New Reporting Structure
As I mentioned in the April 23rd posting, as of July 1 the AHSL now reports to Dr. William Crist, Vice President for Health Affairs. I have met with Dr. Crist and expect to meet with him as needed to keep him informed about library issues. Mary Holcomb, Cindy Steber and I recently met with Jerry Miron, the Chief Financial Officer of the AHSC (who also reports to Dr. Crist) to explain the library’s financial situation and unique needs.
In addition, Biomedical Communications and the “software side” of Information Technology Services will now report to the Vice President. This means that Marcus will continue to report to Mike Griffith who will now report to Rick McNeely. As most of you know, Stef Walz has left the university. Other staff in Biomedical Communications will now support our website.
Surveys
As mentioned several weeks ago, we will be surveying our users once or twice a month for the next year. Surveys will be handed out during one or two two-hour windows each month. You’ll see a desk at the entrance during those time periods with library staff handing out questionnaires. There will be box near the exit for people to return their survey forms. Those who view electronic journals will be given an online version of the survey during those same time periods. We are also asking our liaison librarians in the Colleges of Pharmacy, Public Health and Nursing to distribute (or fill out for phone and email questions) surveys to their users.
Email and Calendars
This morning’s Wildcat reported that the decision has been made to move students to the Google calendar and Gmail. However, CIO Michelle Norin is still looking at the pros and cons of moving faculty and staff to the Google products. The paper reports that she is leaning toward Google. She is quoted as saying that UITS will provide an easy way to migrate email to any new system and that users will choose when to make the move. AHSL will follow the university decision on this. Dr. Crist, CE for you
Dr. Crist’s visit
On Tuesday the new Vice President for Health Sciences, Dr. William Crist, visited the AHSL. I took him on a tour of the building and we talked in my office. I’m happy to report that Dr. Crist seems to understand the value of libraries and their importance to the health sciences. He was impressed with our service approach as we reach out to the Colleges on campus. An important part of his job is to support the development of the Phoenix campus. There too, he sees an important role for the library. He was happy to hear that we have a staffed library in place in Phoenix and that we have good relations with the hospital librarians in Tucson and Phoenix.

A reminder that the University offers a variety of opportunities for professional development: the Professional Success Institute, the University Leadership Institute, the Successful Supervisor Series, Career Success Strategies Workshops and other general HR courses are all available to UA employees. Lots of news!
Nuñez to testify!
Annabelle will join Jana Bradley, Director of the UA School of Information Resources and Library Science (SIRLS), to testify before Congress in Washington on September 11 at 10 AM. They will testify as witnesses at the Subcommittee on Healthy Families and Communities of the Committee on Education and Labor of the U.S. House of Representatives hearing on "Examining the Role of Museums and Libraries in Strengthening Communities." This bipartisan hearing will examine the role that museums and libraries play in strengthening communities and will look at the Knowledge River program which recruits Native American and Latino students to SIRLS and includes community outreach to teens to address health concerns in Tucson.
Carol also helping to govern!
Carol has accepted an appointment to the Arizona Governor’s Health Care Workforce Plan committee. She has already attended a meeting in the Governor’s Conference Room in Phoenix.
PHRILS & PILS
Don’t miss the new exhibits in the cases in 2101. They highlight the AHSL liaison programs in the Colleges of Public Health and Pharmacy. The exhibits were created by Jennifer and Annabelle.

On Monday, September 29, the AHSL will be hosting a gathering of Tribal Librarians from around the state. A busy program is planned and there will be a variety of exhibitors. “Crist and his staff will occupy space on the second floor of Drachman Hall in the pharmacy wing, where continuing education and communications are currently located. Individuals presently housed in that space will be relocated.”

Fourth Floor, Office Renovation, Moves, VP for Health Affairs
Fourth Floor
We are going to experiment with a “reading room” approach to the fourth floor. Javad is working on a plan to move some study carrels and study tables into the southern third of the room. We hope this more open arrangement, which will allow students to see each other studying, will encourage a quieter environment.
Office Renovation, Moves
Facilities management (FM) has had many urgent projects that had been given a higher priority than our project to divide the former IS Desk office into three new offices. Now, however, these other projects are mostly complete. Don’t hold your breath, but we may soon see some progress on this project.
FM is still gathering information as we negotiate the possible swap of office space between the second floor IS offices near the Java City area and the former Systems offices.

Today the Tucson Citizen reported that the University has asked the Board of Regents to approve the hiring of Dr. William Crist. If approved he would be on campus no later than November 17. Several people from AHSL were able to attend his presentation to the campus on Thursday, July 31. He seemed to be very personable and knowledgeable about academic medicine. He spoke about the need to integrate all of the health professions. I’ve spoken to people who have worked with him and they report that he has an understanding of libraries and a positive attitude about them.

Budget, Vice President for Health Affairs
Budget
We still do not know what our budget will be for the coming year. We do have funds “loaded” into our budget to allow us to operate; the question is how much will we have to give back to the university? The Board of Regents met on Thursday to discuss how the $50,000,000 cut will be distributed among UA, ASU and NAU. The UA’s portion will be about $19,600,000. We will have to wait for President Shelton to determine how the cuts will be distributed among the units. In April, at the request of the President (to all units), we submitted a plan detailing how a possible library cut would be funded. It would not affect any existing positions but would cut severely into “discretionary spending” such as furniture cleaning and reupholstering and, depending on the size of the cut, could have a minor effect on collections.

Dr. Crist is currently Dean of the University of Missouri School of Medicine. The forum is open to all.
