AV weeding
Several people in the library have been involved in a project to weed the Audio-Visual collection and they've recently completed their mission. There were many steps involved in this project that lasted several months. Dave Piper analyzed the AV collection on the 3rd floor and selected titles for weeding based on criteria such as outdated formats, low usage, layers of dust, etc. Over several months, students under Javad's supervision pulled the designated items from the shelves and delivered them to Collection Services for processing. Azul Gomez, a Knowledge River student, prepared the items for discard and flagged the associated catalog records. Mary Holcomb supervised the work, deleted the catalog records and removed our holdings from OCLC. The remaining titles have been 'collapse shifted' to the end of the compact shelving. Many thanks to everyone who participated in this dusty and unglamorous project! Nearly 5,000 titles were discarded, freeing up nearly a full range of shelving. The next phase of the project will involve having Biomed convert some of the titles to DVD.
Flat screen monitors in group study rooms
It looks like I forgot to announce that we have installed flat screen monitors in two of our group study rooms, 2150M and 2150N. These are the larger rooms on the west wall of the 2nd floor. Students can plug their computers into the monitors to make group work easier. Right now we’re only checking these rooms out to groups. Joan sent out an AHSC Memo about this and posted notices on our Facebook page and on the web site.

New Group Study, Webcast, Campus transformation

What used to be the photocopier room on the third floor (with windows looking into CTS) is now a group study room with two whiteboards.

Budget and Campus “transformation”
We still do not know what size our budget cut will be. My best guess is that it will be between 5-6%. Although this will affect our ability to clean and refurbish the building and will mean a flat budget for collections already hit by inflation, it is not as bad as it could be. However, we’ve been warned to expect another 2% cut in mid-year and at least a 6% cut during the next fiscal year.
Provost Hay has asked the campus to reduce the number of departments by 50% by 2010 and to look for ways to combine units to increase efficiency. All units are expected to participate and those who do not voluntarily participate will have decisions made for them. We are likely to see a centralization of administrative functions and a reorganization of many of the Colleges, Schools and departments across campus.

Telemedicine, Nursing, New Group Study Room
Telemedicine
Please join us next Wednesday, August 6 at 1:30 PM in room 3230 (the teleconferencing room up in the old LRC) when Dr. Ronald Weinstein, Director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program, will speak to the library staff about some recent telemedicine initiatives in which the library participated. The AHSL has been involved with the Arizona Telemedicine Program since it was created in 1996. Dr. Weinstein is an enthusiastic and engaging speaker.
College of Nursing
Following a meeting last month, the College of Nursing has offered AHSL an office to house our College of Nursing liaison librarian. The office will be available in late August and we’ll be moving quickly to strengthen our ties to Nursing with a librarian onsite.

We have begun to convert the third floor photocopier room (with the windows looking into CTS) into a group study room. The last remaining photocopier has been moved out. Next the carpet will be cleaned and the walls painted. We’ll be putting in a table and chairs and re-keying the locks. We’re going to wait to see if blinds between the room and CTS are necessary.

Furniture
Some of you may have noticed a lot of furniture arriving this Friday afternoon. The law library offered us first choice on furniture that they don’t need. We have taken 90 upholstered wooden chairs, some stacking chairs and several tables. Some of the chairs will replace worn furniture in the group study rooms. The stacking chairs may be used in the staff lounge. Some round tables may free up other tables for use in group study rooms. Thanks to Linda and Javad for checking out the furniture and overseeing its move.

Office Moves
My thanks again to the Space Task Force for their work in March and April. We have been able to implement many of their suggestions: the Purple Room has been enclosed and turned into a quiet study area, study tables have been added to the reference area, the Information Desk staff have been moved to the offices previously used by ILL. We have work orders in to move desks out of Fred’s office and the “grad student” offices in IS and to move tables and chairs in, making them group study rooms.
Other changes had to wait until we got quotes for renovations and until the final computer consultants’ report was issued. The Administrative Team reviewed the Space Task Force report and has done a lot of measuring, walking, thinking and discussing. Here are moves that will be taking place over the next several months, beginning soon.
Mikel will be moving to the space previously used by Lillian.
Paula will be moving to the space previously used by Sue Trombley.
The SIRLS students who work in IS will move to where Paula is now.
Robin will be moving to the office previously used by Nathan.
Jose and Spencer will move to where Robin is now.
Spencer’s current office will remain a work and storage room.
Java City, which has used Mikel’s office to store some racks overnight, will now use the hallway closet near the small classroom.
One IS Librarian will move to where Jose is now.
Two IS Librarians will move to where Mikel is now.
Mari Stoddard will move to the workspace in front of Mary Holcomb’s office.
We have asked facilities to build walls in the space previously occupied by Javad, Nga, Andrew, Tessie, Sue and Jeff, creating three new offices.
Three IS Librarians will move to these new offices.
Tables and chairs will be moved into the offices vacated by the IS Librarians, creating new group study rooms.
Thanks to all of you who are moving. It is a lot of work, added to your regular responsibilities.

Window shades, MLA
Window shades
We now have adjustable window shades in the group study rooms on the 4th floor. Students have been asking for these for years and they seem to be making use of them. There is a lot less glare and the rooms look cooler.

Many folks in the library will be at the annual meeting of the Medical Library Association in Philadelphia over the next week. The office staff will know how to contact people if necessary.
