Congratulations Jacque!
The Marcia C. Noyes Award is the Medical Library Association’s highest honor. I’m very excited to tell you that Jacque has been selected as this year’s recipient. Jacque is being honored not only for her past and ongoing contributions to the MLA but also for her work with new and developing health sciences libraries across the country as they establish a model for the twenty-first century. The award is presented at the conclusion of the annual MLA Awards Luncheon at the annual conference. This year’s meeting will be in Seattle, Washington, May 19-23.

Congratulations Nicole and Darla!
Darla Anderson, Clinical Education Librarian, has had a paper accepted and Nicole has had a poster accepted at the 2012 AAMC Western Regional WGEA/WGSA/WOSR Conference in Asilomar, California, March 31 – April 3, 2012. This is a regional meeting of several of the divisions of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Darla’s paper is on a joint project with the Phoenix campus to tag College of Medicine curriculum with subject headings in order to better track what is being taught in which portions of the curriculum. Nicole’s poster is on the use of cloud computing to gather and track accreditation information for the College of Medicine.

Effective Monday, February 6, Kathleen joined the AHSL Phoenix library faculty as our first education librarian! We are most happy to have her here, as she brings superb experience as a health sciences librarian, most recently as the health sciences librarian at the downtown Phoenix campus of ASU, and prior to that as a hospital librarian at John C, Lincoln Hospital. A UA AHSL "Clinical Education Librarian" since 2007, Kathleen is an active member of the Medical Library Association, with several scholarly papers and posted at its annual meetings, including one forthcoming at the 2012 meeting in Seattle. Congratulations Brooke!, Authors postponed

Congratulations Brooke!
After leading AZHIN through the process of choosing a new logo, Brooke has redesigned the AZHIN website using the LibGuides system. You can see the result of her work at http://azhin.org In addition to serving as a gateway to all of AZHIN’s information resources, the page is also customizable so that every one of AZHIN’s members can make the page look like their own. An example is at http://azhin.org/mihs , the website of the Maricopa Integrated Health System, created by Becky Birr and April Aguinaga, two of our Clinical Education Librarians. Many other AZHIN members have used the system to create their own look. Thanks to Brooke for guiding AZHIN through this tremendous change!

Authors' reception postponed
Due to the tremendous amount of work to be done to prepare for the Authors’ reception, we’ve decided to postpone it for a while. Watch for a new date!

SiestaLife in the library

A group of students from the Eller College of Management are going to be running a pilot test of a business idea in the library. This is a temporary test, not permanent. They are creating a "napping" space in the silent study room (the purple room) on the 4th floor. They have moved some of the study carrels out of the room and are moving some of the 4th floor dividers into the room. They hope to soon move some comfortable reclining chairs into the space and will be market testing to see if people will pay to have some quiet rest. Their pilot project will run from 4-6 weeks.
We hope that this will not be too disruptive to our students. The business students assure us that their goal is to keep the area as quiet as possible!
The library will gain from this in several ways. In addition to attracting some attention, the business students have moved some old carrels out of the room. We will replace them with tables, which the students seem to prefer. The dividers that they have moved in from the 4th floor will not be returned to the large portion of the 4th floor at the end of the test. This moves us a little closer to emptying out that space.

Wonderful gift

Dr. Joseph Alpert of the COM faculty receives copies of many new books because of his position as an esteemed cardiologist. For the third year in a row Dr. Alpert has donated these books to the library. This year’s twenty-four titles would have cost more than $3,000 had we purchased them. Dr. Alpert is the editor in chief for the American Journal of Medicine and on the editorial board for the American Journal of Cardiology and also serves as a judge for an author’s award. Mary Holcomb has sent him a thank you note.

Authors, Streetcars

AHSL honors authors
Save the date! AHSL will host a reception honoring AHSC faculty members who have authored or edited a book in the last five years. Everyone is invited for refreshments and a brief program on Wednesday March 7 from 3:30-5:00 PM

New streetcar line
Groundbreaking for the campus end of the new streetcar line is scheduled for April 12, somewhere near the Keating (Bio5) building. The exact time and location will be announced as we get closer to the date.

Going up!

Work on our public elevators is scheduled to begin during the next month. My understanding is that the control units will be replaced, not the cars.
