What is the CTSA/CTSI? Who are the Interprofessional Education Core Group?
I have referred to the CTSA or CTSI several times in these updates. The Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSAs) are funding from the National Institutes of Health to research centers around the country. There are now 55 medical research institutions around the country with funding to create their own Clinical and Translational Sciences Institutes (CTSIs). When fully implemented by 2012, about 60 institutions will be linked together to energize the discipline of clinical and translational science. The goal is to increase the efficiency and speed with which research discoveries are turned into usable clinical products.
Getting a CTSA is very important for a medical research effort. Organizations that have a CTSI will be much more likely to attract additional NIH funding. The UA has applied twice for a CTSA but has not been funded. Now, under the leadership of Dr. Fernando Martinez, a third application is being written.
Jeanette was instrumental in getting the library involved in the first two proposals. She will continue to take the lead as we work with the CTSA staff on the new proposal.
The Interprofessional Education Core Group (IPE) includes representatives from the four AHSC Colleges. They have created a curriculum that brings students from the various colleges together for learning opportunities and team building. They have been charged with making this effort an integral part of the curriculum in all of the Colleges.
As mentioned in previous updates, we are working with the CTSA staff and the IPE leadership group to develop plans for the fourth floor that will support the needs of all of us – primarily collaborative space that can be used for student study in the evenings and on weekends. Some administrative office space will be included in the plans, but very little compared to the space available.

Budget, Space, Congratulations to Sally
Budget
Dr. Crist has asked each AHSC Unit Director and Business Manager to make a budget presentation. All units have common forms to fill out that present our budget over the last several years. In addition we can present text describing our budget situation and give an oral presentation. Cindy and I have been working on these documents for several weeks and have also consulted with the Administrative Team. Our presentation hasn’t been scheduled but will likely be in the next 2-3 weeks.
Library Space
On Wednesday eleven people representing the library, facilities, Interprofessional Education and the Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI) met to talk about shared use of the fourth floor. All groups have similar interests and needs with a lot of overlap. There are a few needs for dedicated space for each group but, for the most part, all groups would like to see additional meeting, conference and classrooms. All understand our need to make these rooms available for student study. Each group is going to make a list of the rooms that they must have and we will meet again in a few weeks to let facilities try to make sense of these requests.

Congratulations to Sally Harvey, Director of Learning Resources at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix and AHSL Clinical Education Librarian and her colleague Janene Wandersee. They have coauthored a paper in the July 2010 Journal of the Medical Library Association titled, “Publication rate of abstracts of papers and posters presented at Medical Library Association annual meetings.” The journal is available in the library in print or in PubMed Central at:

Photocopier, large monitor, space
New Photocopier
Our new photocopier does everything that the old one did and more. The office staff is working on learning all of the new features and will be offering classes soon. Until then they can walk you through some of the new procedures. You can send and receive faxes, scan (in black & white) and have a .pdf document sent to your email. You can also send a print job but attach a password so that it won’t print out until you get down to the machine.

The Arizona Telemedicine Program has purchased a large TV monitor for use in their distance education classes. For their purposes it will be mounted on the back wall of 2102. We will be working with them to determine how we and other groups can use it.

At Dr. Crist’s request Jeanette and I will be meeting with leaders from the CTSI (Clinical Translational Science Institute) and AHSC Interprofessional Education (IPE) to brainstorm better ways to layout the 4th floor. The library (and the space committee), CTSI and IPE would all like to see a variety of meeting rooms, training spaces and study spaces on the floor. Dr. Crist would like to have an architect review these ideas and present one or more possible solutions. The library hopes to have the architect review all of the floors of the library to help us make better use of our space.

New exhibit, GoLocal
New Exhibit
The library is in for a treat for the next couple of months as the Exhibits committee is working with Nikki Westra, a local artist who uses antique medical illustrations of the human body to create new and interesting images in the form of collages. The library is hosting a reception for Ms. Westra on Wednesday, July 14th, 2:30-4:00. Please join us in welcoming her to AHSL.

Just a reminder that the National Library of Medicine decided to discontinue support for GoLocal – a state-by-state collection of web sites that directed people to health services near their homes. As a result our links to both Arizona GoLocal and to the Tribal Connections Four Corners GoLocal sites will now take users to a generic search page at NLM linking them to some nationwide directories of healthcare providers. Although this project served the public for almost 10 years, NLM felt that the increased availability of information on the Internet made GoLocal redundant. Thanks to Jacque for leading the project most recently and to everyone at AHSL who contributed over the years.

Congratulations Yamila (and Olivia and Annabelle)
Congratulations to Yamila who received an ALA REACH 21 Scholarship to attend the 2010 Spectrum Leadership Institute at in Washington last week. The Institute brings together library students and graduates from across the country to network, learn models of cross-cultural leadership, reaffirm professional values grounded in service to diverse communities, develop career skills and connect with a wide-range of leaders and potential mentors. Olivia Baca, a former Knowledge River Institute Intern at AHSL, also received a REACH 21 scholarship. Annabelle served at the Institute on a panel designed to help attendees sharpen their interviewing skills during one of the sessions.

As requested by the Advisory Committee on Library Space and Dr. Crist, the Interprofessional Education (IPE) Leadership Group has given us a document supporting the recommendations of the space committee report. Their document says, among other things, that providing a variety of meeting rooms will be helpful to IPE. This should strengthen the case that we’re making to Dr. Crist. It appears that we will be getting another request to turn the 4th floor into offices next week. By then Dr. Crist will have the IPE report and another statement from us on the importance of keeping the library as an educational space.

Pat’s Party Last Friday, Welcome again Yamila
Thanks to everyone for giving Pat a first-rate send-off last Friday! She seemed to enjoy it and there was plenty of time and space for her to visit with her colleagues and friends over the years. Thanks especially to Tessie for creating the flyer and the powerpoint show, to Linda and Mary for organizing the space and taking care of the refreshments, to Jose for the technical set-up for the powerpoint and the music, and to Linda, Gary, and Cindy for preliminary planning several weeks ago. The office is guessing there were about 70 attending.
If you attended that event, you heard that the library has hired Yamila El-khayat as the Interim Outreach Services Librarian. This in an expansion of the part-time role we hired her for in April (see April 9 blog) She has begun working full-time and for starters will take on Pat's role in the We Search program, attend the TC4C planning meeting in Albuquerque next month, and carry on in outreach for the next several months, She will be with us through April 30, 2011.

Strategic planning
Strategic Planning
Our three strategic planning teams have been formed and will begin meeting soon. The groups will soon be choosing (or may have already elected) a facilitator. The “champions” for the groups are: Transforming Services – Sandy, Promoting the Library/External Communications – Cindy, and Working Environment – Gary. If you missed the “kick-off” meeting, be sure to touch base with one of your team members so that you don’t miss anything! Thank you all for participating in this important planning process.
