Congratulations Carol, Pat and Gary
Carol, Pat Auflick and Gary have coauthored a paper that was published in the January 2011 issue of the JMLA: Journal of the Medical Library Association. The article titled, “Upward evaluation at the Arizona Health Sciences Library” describes our supervisor evaluation process and relies on survey data that you supplied. Special Update: Clinical Education Librarians
What and who is a Clinical Education Librarian (or CEL)? CELs are librarians who have been given Affiliate status with the College of Medicine. The Clinical Education Librarian faculty appointment was created by the library to recognize the efforts of professional librarians in supporting the residency programs of the University of Arizona and/or the clinical education of students in the University Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Public Health. It corresponds to the Clinical Faculty rank granted by the College of Medicine. All of the CELs work with our students in one way or another – either during their residency, their clinical rotations through hospitals, their introduction to medical school or their first two years of school. These librarians act as our extension across the state and give our students the support that we cannot. Here is a list (in reverse alphabetical order) of our Clinical Education Librarians with a very short biography of each one.
Kathy Zeblisky, MLS, AHIP is a solo medical librarian at Phoenix Children’s Hospital where she has worked for the past 9 years. She is an active participant in the Hospital Library Section of MLA, and groups such as MLGSCA, AZHIN and CABL. In her spare time she practices yoga, always has a pile of books around to read simultaneously (and now a Kindle), and enjoys nature and wildlife.
Lora Robbins
I have been a medical librarian forever, thirty years or so. Since 2002, I have had a dream job at Banner Good Sam in Phoenix. My primary job responsibilities include searching and teaching but also have the luxury of time to work with the students, residents and nurses on their individual EBM and school projects. I enjoy the hospital environment and have developed professional friendships across many groups and departments.
Personally, I’ve been married for over 40 years, to a high-energy husband who works as a health care consultant and have two daughters living in Southern California, who I see as often as possible.
Kathleen Noma Carlson is the Health Sciences Librarian at Arizona State University, Downtown Phoenix campus, Information Commons Library. She works with the AHSL-Phoenix to bring Evidence-Based Practice to all entering medical students. She has participated in the Prologue, introductory workshop of library research to incoming classes since 2007. She has also been involved in judging posters at the Annual Excellence Day and also in the Mock Medical Interviews for the Office of Outreach and Multicultural Affairs.
Sally Harvey is currently the Senior Manager for Library Services for Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ where she has worked for the past 10 years. She previously worked for Banner Health at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, and has also worked in academic medical libraries. She is a distinguished member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals. In her spare time, she is an avid hiker and gardener.
Lynn Flance
I’m about to celebrate (?) my 26th year as a medical librarian. I graduated from the U of A library school in 1985 and started my career at Tucson Medical Center. I worked about 9 years at TMC and 1 year at Tucson General Hospital. I started a consumer health library at the Tucson Ronald McDonald House and stayed there about three years before coming to the VA in Feb of 1998. I love it here.
My other loves include China things like going there (8 times) and practicing Qigong and studying Taoism. I also love reading, walking, and knitting.
Marni Ditmar
I am the supervisor of the medical library at TMC Healthcare, and have been with TMC for ten years. I’m active in the folk music and dance community and have rededicated myself to working on gun control. Travel to Europe and Asia, hiking and camping in the mountains, and drawing cartoons are some other interests. I love being a medical librarian.
Becky Birr
I’ve worked at Maricopa Integrated Health System in Phoenix, AZ for over ten years. It is the safety net hospital for Maricopa County. I love to watch sports, both college and professional, and of course hang out with my 19 month old daughter and watch her explore the world.
Darla Anderson has enjoyed working at the UA College of Medicine since 2003 and in the Office of Medical Student Education for the past 4 years. She earned her MLS in 2000 from Simmons College in Boston and worked as a Research Librarian at BBN Technologies in Cambridge, MA for two years before moving back to Arizona to be closer to her son and daughter in Tucson. In her spare time, she enjoys studying Spanish, reading, writing, painting, decorating, and traveling to new places.
April Aguinagua
I’ve worked for MIHS for 4 years. Previously to that I was a children’s librarian for 14 years at various public libraries in Arizona, California and Texas. I read a lot (mostly fiction) and love finding new books to read. I even have a book blog to keep track of my reading - http://agbooks.blogspot.com. In my spare time I travel, scrapbook, cook and love going to the movies. I am a 2nd generation librarian – my mother was a librarian for 24 years, and my husband is also a librarian. We met in library school at the University of Arizona.

Retirement
Please join me in extending best wishes to Vera who will be retiring next month. Vera’s last day will be Thursday, February 17th. She is looking forward to spending more time with her children and grandchildren and working on a variety of art projects.

COM-Phx HSEB Construction Update

STARPAHC
The AHSL holds the archives of the STARPAHC project, an early telemedicine program carried out by NASA, the Indian Health Service and the Tohono O’Odham nation. Last night the Tohono O’Odham tribe celebrated the accomplishments of this program with a seminar in Sells, AZ that brought together some of the original participants to discuss the significance of this early effort. An attractive exhibit featured pictures from the archive. Speakers shared stories ranging from the lasting impact of this pioneering program to reminiscences such as the “disappearing truck” story. Dave, Jeanette, Yamila and Gary attended and I believe all found it to be an inspiring evening. Campus construction
The Comstock Building, NW of the library is being renovated. When it is finished, AHSC Human Resources will be moving into Comstock. All parking meters on the AHSC will soon be replaced with pay stations that will only accept credit or debit cards – no cash. However the new machines can call your cell phone when your time is about to expire and allow you to add time from the phone. Outdoor security cameras will be installed around campus in the coming months thanks to a grant from Homeland Security.

Thank you
Thank you all for your patience and understanding this week. Just getting into the building has been difficult both for us and for those who want to use the library. On top of that we have all been dealing with extraordinary circumstances. Stress levels are high. You should know that I’ve received phone calls, email messages and postings on my personal Facebook account from librarians all over the country asking how we are doing and expressing concern and sorrow. The memorial service last night was just a first step toward healing. We have a long way to go. We can be cheered by hearing the news that those who survived the shooting seem to be recovering remarkably well. I truly appreciate that everyone has kept up our normal, excellent level of service and that we have all helped each other through these past few days by sharing, comforting each other and sometimes laughing with each other. Thanks for supporting the library and each other.

Searches
We have gotten permission from Dr. Crist, the Vice President for Health Affairs, to open two searches for librarians. The first will be to fill our College of Medicine liaison vacancy created when David left. We hope to post that position next week. The Administrative Team is discussing how best to structure the other position.
