Activity Report for November 2008– Deputy Director, Outreach, and AZHIN

TribalMany of the roadblocks to moving forward with the TC4C community-based partners project were removed this month after a meeting with Claire Hamasu. Pat can now move forward with the community of Hard Rock, Arizona. One of the downsides of working on multi-institutional projects is the number of IRBs (institutional review boards) that must be navigated through.

The library exhibited at the AK Chin Diabetes Day onSaturday, November 15th.
WE Search Annabelle and Pat were interviewed about WE Search for a TV segment to air Nov. 30th at 10:30am on KTTU-TV Channel 18. Bob Lee conducted the interview for his program, Community Forum. Topics included WE Search, Knowledge River and librarianship in general.

Planning for next year and the conclusion of this year continue. Meetings were held with Jana Bradley and the KRs about next year, and the Sunnyside pricipal. Input on next year’s budget was offered; arrangements were made for the high school students’ final paycheck

AZHIN
Mikel reports that that AZHIN dues invoices for 2009 have been mailed; the 2009 coordinator contract has been updated and is being routed through the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects on main campus.

And on the technical front, Yavapai College’s access issues have been resolved; NAU is working directly with Ovid to respolve some LWW isues; Athens activity is handled daily; portal customization questions come up occasionally.
General
Outreach staff had a retreat on November 7th over at the Memorial Student Union to plan for the coming year.
Paul Bracke, formerly Head of Systems and Netowrking at AHSL and now at Purdue University, will be working with Marcus to provide development pathways for the EBM Search engine. He and David Howse and Sam Keim were the original developers. WE want to solve the “Wiley” problem (let Jeanette know if you want more info), provide the flexibility for liaison librarians in other colleges to to purpose the software for the unique needs of their colleges, and to provide a pathway for AZHIN to use the software as well. Also we are hoping that it will be useful in developing federated searches for library users overall.
The Continuation of the NLM/Knowledge River award for 2008-2009 is also being processed through the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects. For 4 years (since 2005-2006), the NLM Office of Specialized Information Services has provided funding for AHSL to support Knowledge River graduate students by providing work in our library.
Knowledge River interns will continue working for us during the Spring semester, Yamilla with the InfoDesk for 12 hours and 8 hours in Outreach, and Olivia with Collections Services for 12 hours and 8 hours with the InfoDesk. Our interns are great this year!
The Indian Health Information Management Conference will be held in Phoenix in mid December. Jean Roehrs from the Phoenix Indian Medical Center and perhaps Jacaue Doyle will staff a poster developed by the Outreaach Connections Steering Committee. The committee, which Jeanette participates in, has developed a a Wiki, whose purpose is to promote the sharing of information about health information projects with native populations. OTHER -The MLA Webcast November 12 attracted 7 attendees and one on-line request for viewing – the topic was Survival Tips and Stories: Expanding the Library's Services in Times of Disaster. Evaluation forms have been mailed to Debra Cavanaugh – CE Certificates were distributed
