New carpeting
After listening to the opinions of those who came to see the carpet, and after viewing the carpet samples under various lighting conditions and next to various pieces of furniture, we have selected “Vertical” as the pattern and color for the new carpet. This was the deep forest green sample. The baseboard will be a navy blue. Installation should begin in Java City in about five weeks. Except for the Java City area installation will take place at night when the library is closed. The entire 2nd and 3rd floors will be recarpeted. You can see a sample of the new color in the office.
Phoenix planning
Planning is still underway for a Health Sciences Education Building on the Phoenix campus. The library will be housed in this building and will be joined by the contents of the ASU College of Nursing Health Informatics Learning Resources Center and one staff person from ASU. We have the latest (but not final version) of the plans down in the office. Please stop by to see them!

Fund Raising
Jeanette and Gary recently met with Brian Bateman from the Development Office. We discussed strategies for attracting donors to the library. Brian is asking departments to create one-page fact sheets that can be given to potential donors. He has given us some samples and we will be drafting one for the library. Mary H. is compiling a list of people who have donated books to the library. They may be getting a call from Brian and copies of our fact sheet!
Strategic Planning
Be sure to read the rather long email sent yesterday afternoon from the Administrative Team (Strategic Planning - Values statement) in order to prepare for our next All Staff meeting.
Budget
Several people have asked about the budget. The state of Arizona accepted federal stimulus funds. As a result they are required to not cut the higher education budget any lower than 2006 levels. Since Arizona universities have been cut several times since 2006 our budget cannot technically be cut . . . until July 2011 when the stimulus will end. Current proposals in the legislature include provisions to delay payments to the universities. This has already happened several times. The UA has a reserve fund that it has used to take us through these delays in funding. In the short run we should be OK with no further cuts this year. Some UA colleges are planning to hold back some funds from next year’s budget. We have heard nothing about a similar plan from the AHSC. In the long run our strategic planning process will help us to identify priorities for our budget as we approach July 2011.

Brooke elected!
Brooke has been elected President of SABL (Southern Arizona Biomedical Librarians) for 2010. Congratulations Brooke!
Carol speaks!
Carol has been invited to participate in a panel discussion at a pre-conference symposium at the annual meeting of the Medical Library Association in Washington, DC in May. The symposium is about “informationist” programs – librarians with subject expertise who work closely with clients. Carol has been asked to take part in the panel on clinical informationists. Other panelists will represent Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt and the NIH library.
MeSH Rebounds!
Mary Holcomb has been working with UAL staff for over a year to get the MeSH headings in the Innovative catalog to function correctly. Finally the problem was identified and corrected and now MeSH headings can be used to search the catalog with reliable results. Mary has also had a new MeSH feature turned on in the Serials Solutions A-Z list. When you go to eJournals ( http://zp9vv3zm2k.search.serialssolutions.com/?V=1.0&L=ZP9VV3ZM2K&N=100&S=T_AZ&C=A ), you now have a choice of selecting " a subject category" or "a medical subject category," the latter of which uses broad MeSH headings to search the electronic journal holdings.

No, we in the office are not too lazy to take down the ornaments hanging from the ceiling. If you look carefully, a small basketball and UA Wildcats basketball posters have joined the red and blue globes. Our holiday decorations have been converted to a show of team spirit and will stay up through basketball season.

New carpeting!
We will soon be getting new carpeting on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Carpet tile will be installed beginning sometime in late March. The whole process should take about 5-6 weeks. Work on the Java City area will be done during the day, early in the process. Work on the rest of the 2nd floor and the 3rd floor will be done between midnight and 6 AM. We hope that there will be some extra carpet tiles available for the first floor hallway. I’ll keep you posted as we determine more details.

Meeting, AZHIN contract
MLA Chapter Meeting
Several folks from AHSL are attending the joint meeting of two regional chapters of the Medical Library Association in Glendale, AZ. Mary Riordan, Brooke, Jacque and Lindsey all worked on various committees to organize this meeting. Clinical Education Librarians Becky Birr and Kathy Zeblisky are co-chairs of the entire meeting and Lora Robbins and April Aguinaga have also worked on committees. We also have several people presenting papers and posters. Jeanette presented both a paper and a poster, on behalf of her several co-authors from other libraries, reporting on our collaboration with the other libraries of the Tribal Connections Four Corners project. Annabelle presented a paper, on behalf of her co-author Martha Moore-Monroy from the U of A, on Information and Outreach about HPV and the HPV Vaccine. Jacque, Lindsey and Kathleen Carlson of ASU (one of our Clinical Education Librarians) presented a paper on the challenges of developing a new library. Carol presented a paper, on behalf of her co-authors Pat and Gary, on our process of supervisor evaluation.
AZHIN Contract
Sponsored Projects approved the AZHIN administrative contract this week. Although expected, this is always good news. AZHIN will pay the library over $100,000 during 2010 to handle its administrative and technical affairs; the amount includes salaries, technical support, travel, and various miscellaneous items. This is the 12th year that the library has managed this account.

Strategic Planning
The Administrative Team spent a very productive day and a half working with our facilitator, Rick Forsman, to design a strategic planning process. We will use the All Staff meeting on Feb. 4 and another about two weeks later to begin this process. Watch for an email before the Feb. 4th meeting with a document for you to comment on. The ATeam is looking forward to working with you on this multi-part plan.

In the latest issue of the Journal of the Medical Library Association I coordinated the publication of six articles describing how health sciences libraries have recently lost or been asked to give up space. Webinar, Video and Planning
Refugee resources webinar
On Thursday at noon Mary R. and Pat presented a webinar about sources of health information for refugees and others who may speak languages other than English. There were over 40 people watching from all over the United States and I’m sure that they found the presentation as interesting and informative as I did. Mary and Pat were using the WebEx software, which seemed to work very well for those of us viewing the presentation on our computers.

Annabelle is working with staff members in Biomedical Communications to produce a short (under 2 minutes) video about RefWorks. This is an experiment to see if this kind of “spot” can be used in D2L modules or on our website to bring attention to library resources.
